Fever is the eighth album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. It was released 1 October 2001 by Parlophone Mushroom Records, and Capitol Records. Minogue began work on the album in 2001, working with famous songwriters and producers like Cathy Dennis, Rob Davis, and Tom Nichols, moving into a "sexier" and "groovier" form of dance music. The album received mostly positive reviews from critics, with most noting the dance and electric elements on the album and calling it edgier than Light Years. After its release, the album reached number one in Australia, Austria, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom while peaking within the top twenty-five of other countries, including an unusually high peak for Minogue in the U.S. with number three.

The album's first single, "Can't Get You Out of My Head", peaked at number one in fifteen countries, including a number seven on the United States' Billboard Hot 100 and a platinum certification there, becoming Minogue's biggest worldwide hit to date. The second single, "In Your Eyes", reached number one in Australia and number three in the UK, while peaking within the top twenty-five in other countries. The next single was "Love at First Sight", which reached number twenty-three in the US, two in the UK, and three in Australia, while becoming a top forty hit in the rest of the world. The final single was "Come Into My World", peaking at number four in Australia and number eight in the UK, while only managing a number ninety-one in the US.

Minogue promoted the album in a series of live performances, including her most expensive tour to date, the KylieFever2002 tour. In the US, the album received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America and it sold over 1.1 million copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.[1] Fever also earned Minogue a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for the song "Come Into My World". To date "Fever" has sold over 8 million copies worldwide.

Background

According to A&R Miles Leonard, Fever was the album that Parlophone had envisioned when they first signed the artist in 1999 and wanted to reestablish her pop career.[2] With its more direct approach, the first album with the new label, Light Years, had succeeded in reintroducing Minogue to a mainstream pop audience, but Fever brought to fruition the more electronic, programmed and contemporary sound that had always been in mind for Minogue.[2]During the album's production, world famous pop singer Michael Jackson wrote two tracks for the US edition of the album: "I'll Try Anyhing Once" and "Time Bomb". However, neither of these songs were included on the final track list.[3]

There are three different versions of the album cover. The original version had Minogue wearing white and holding a microphone. This version was distributed to Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Canada. When the album was later released in the U.S. and re-issued (in some countries) in Asia, the cover was changed to a cover similar to that of "In Your Eyes". This cover is also available in Canada. The cover for the bonus disc edition is similar to the original, but with Minogue wearing a blue PVC costume instead.

Composition

"More More More", the album's opening track, hears Minogue "oozing sensuous vocals" over a "funky" bass and neo-disco beats, beginning the up-tempo sound of the album.[4][5] The second track and "Modjo-esq", disco-stormer of a third single from the album, "Love at First Sight", continues the raunchy feel of the album, but goes for a more Euro-flavored, classic disco sound.[4][6][7] The first single from the album "Can't Get You Out of My Head" turns to a more mid-tempo, dance-floor pleasing sound, with pulses and grooves.[8] The poised title track and promotional single from the album, "Fever", uses tempting lyrics ("Hey doctor, just what do you diagnose... So now, shall I take off my clothes?") and suggestive panting along with production that has been compared to that of the '80s, to give off a more mature sound for Minogue.[4][9] The song has been noted for its close resemblance to "Red Alert" by Basement Jaxx.[8] "Give It to Me" further continues the more sexual sound, with its seductive lyrics and constant telephone-like bleeps, though it has often been described as more straightforward than dirty.[5][6][9] "Fragile" continues the up-tempo sound of the album, having been described as "atmospheric" in its sound, but has also been called "indistinct."[5][9]

The album's fourth single, "Come Into My World", is a more disco-oriented, reminiscent Eumir Deodato's fantasy soundscape. Lyrically, the song is a plea for love, asking the listener to "[take] these hands that were made to touch and feel you."[7][9] The second single, "In Your Eyes", is another disco-sounding club track that lyrically propels Minogue further into a more sexual sound on the lyrics "I want to make it with you."[7][8] "Dancefloor" is another club track that has been compared to the Eurodisco sound of Lisa Stansfield and Real McCoy.[9] The track "Love Affair" continues the up-beat groove of the album, with chirpy coos and precise articulation, though its wannabe sexy lyrics have been called "hollow and mechanical."[5][7] "Your Love" defers from the rest of the album, turning down the bpm in favor of a more warm sounding track, with sweet vocals and a pleasant acoustic guitar line.[4] The closing track, "Burning Up", turns back to the disco sound of the album, with lyrics that once again refer to Minogue on a night out.[4][8]

Allmusic gave the album a positive review, giving it four and a half of out five stars and calling Minogue a close second to Madonna for the master of catchy hooks.[6] BBC's Jacqueline Hodges also gave the album a positive review, saying "by leaving her pure pop roots behind a little, to give way to a more daring, dance-floor pleasing sound, Kylie has found a winning formula that pleases both 'the kids' and their salivating dads alike."[4] NME gave the album a seven out of ten, while saying "Kylie continues to show them how it's done: with taste, style and while wearing as few clothes as possible." He called the album a "very good one", while comparing to Daft Punk.[8] Jason Thompson of Popmatters said the album was another "smash" for Kylie and said it was "nothing but a perfect album of gorgeous dance music." He said the album was "sexy" and "fun" and that Minogue "knows how to express herself through irresistible melodies and seductive emoting."[7] Yahoo Music UK contrasted the album to Light Years, saying that it moved into a "sexier groove-oriented direction" and called in Minogue's greatest album to date.[19]

In October 2010, Fever was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums.[20]

Chart performance

In Minogue's native country Australia, the album debuted at number one in the country, Minogue's second number one album. It stayed at number one for five weeks, and stayed in the Australian Albums Chart for seventy-four weeks in total, becoming Minogue's highest and longest album in that country. It was certificated 7X Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).[21] Fever debuted at number three on the New Zealand Albums Chart. The album sold over 7,500 copies in the country, receiving gold certification in its first week. The album peaked at number three in the country, and later was certificated 2X Platinum, staying in the charts for forty-four weeks.[22][23]

Elsewhere, the album was success. The album debuted at number one in the UK, and stayed there for two weeks, and stayed in the charts for seventy weeks in total.[24] It was certificated 5X Platinum in the country and sold over 1.9 million copies in the UK alone.[25] The album peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200. It became Minogue's most successful album in the US, and was certificated platinum in the US. The album has sold eight million copies worldwide, making it Minogue's best-selling album to date.[26]

In 2008 it was announced that the album is the first album released by a non-Russian act to receive a diamond certification in Russia.[27] The album won Best International Album at the 2002 BRIT Awards. It became Minogue's highest-selling album in Australia, US, Canada, and Russia, among others, and her overall highest-selling album.

Singles

"Can't Get You Out of My Head" was released in September 2001 in Europe and Australia. It debuted at number one in Australia, Ireland, and the UK and remained there for four weeks in each of the three countries. It also hit the top spot in some chart in over 40 countries. In 2002, the song was released in the U.S. and became her second ever top-ten hit, reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. It was her first top-ten hit in the U.S. since 1988, the first being "The Loco-Motion". It also reached number one on the US Dance/Club Play chart. To date, it has became Minogue's most successful single to date and her signature song. It was announced that "In Your Eyes" would be the second single from the album. It was released in February 2002. It reached the top position in Australia, Hungary and Romania, while peaking at number three in the UK, number six in Ireland and number eleven in Canada. Although it was released with success, the single did not manage to chart in the US because it was not released in that country.

"Love at First Sight" was released as the third single from the album. It was released in June 2002. It reached number two in the UK and number three in Australia. (The b-side was the acclaimed "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head" remix.) The track was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2003, after reaching number one on the U.S. Dance/Club Play chart. It reached number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at number seven on the Irish Singles Chart. Note: this is not the same song as the "Love at First Sight" that appears on Minogue's 1988 debut, Kylie. The last single was "Come into My World", which was released in November 2002. It reached number four in Australia, number eight in the UK, number eleven in Ireland, number twenty in New Zealand and number ninety-one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Due to thus, the single won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2004, becoming Minogue's first grammy award in her career..

Promotion

In April 2002, Minogue embarked on a six-month tour titled KylieFever2002. The three-legged tour began on 26 April 2002 in Cardiff, Wales and spanned across the UK, mainland Europe, and Australia, before ending on 16 August 2002 in Milan, Italy.[28][29] The tour had a total of forty-nine shows.[28] The budget for the tour was remarkably higher than those of her previous shows and was her biggest production to date.[29] The set featured two staircases and three projection screens to enhance the different seven different acts of the show.[29] Famous Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana created the outfits while choreographer Rafael Bonachela created the dance routines.[29]
